Behind the Sign

In British Sign Language (BSL), the traditional sign for Germany involves tapping a single index finger (in a closed fist) against the forehead. This sign visually represents the spike (pickelhaube) worn on the top of old German and Prussian military helmets in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A widely used, alternative sign is to make the letter 'G' with both hands twice.
